Sibusiso Layton Gumede, born and raised in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Microbiology and Biochemistry from the former University of Natal (UN). He graduated with a Bachelor of Optometry (BOptom) from the former University of Durban Westville (UDW) in 1994 and completed the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Diagnosis and Therapeutical Applications (CAS) from the New England College of Optometry in Boston, USA. Sibusiso Gumede also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management PGDip (Com), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health (PGDip (PubHlth)).
